Goshen’s Braeden Gelletich places second in state tennis

The junior took Commack’s Eddie Liao to the brink for the state championship in a three-set thriller. Liao pulled out the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Sunday. Gelletich finished second in the state.

Gelletich’s record run included knocking off defending champion Stephan Gershfeld of Hewlett 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. The fourth seed outlasted Mamaroneck’s Maxim Kalinin 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

Gelletich, who is a fourth out five-star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net, is receiving Division I interest.
