Newburgh Free Academy’s Josh Yan kept the Section 9 boys golf title in his family.

Yan, a freshman and third-place state finisher as an eighth-grader, built on his first-round, three-stroke lead for a seven-shot win (71-79-150) Wednesday at Casperkill Golf Course in Spackenkill.

Yan’s brother, Mark, won the section title last year. Mark, a junior, advanced to the state tournament by earning the ninth and final qualifying shot by one shot.

Minisink Valley’s Chris Rickard placed second with a 36-hole score of 157 (75-82).

Cornwall’s Andrew Hahn and Aman Patel and Tri-Valley’s Gavin Clarke fired the low round of the day with 6-over 78s.

Also qualifying for the state tournament were Kingston’s Vlademir Olenski and New Paltz’s Oliver Watson and Loyal Goodermote.

Mark Yan and Watson are heading to their third state tournament. Josh Yan, Patel and Olenski will play in their second state championship.
