Wallkill’s Kyle DeGroat commits to Texas

Section’s 9 top returning pitcher will continue his career at one of the highest levels of Division I baseball.

Wallkill senior Kyle DeGroat announced his commitment to the University of Texas of the Southeastern Conference Sunday.

DeGroat’s video from a showcase a few weeks ago caught the attention of the Texas coaching staff. DeGroat visited the Longhorns’ Austin campus last weekend.

“I’m excited to ball out in the SEC,” DeGroat told 845 Sports Nation. “I’m excited to be a Longhorn.”

DeGroat, who was committed to Division I Stony Brook, was overpowering on the mound his junior season for Section 9 champion Wallkill. He was 8-1 with 0.62 ERA. DeGroat struck out 95 in 56 innings and allowed only five earned runs. He hit .381 with five home runs and 21 RBI.

Texas, which is moving from the Big 12 Conference to the SEC next season, is recruiting DeGroat as a pitcher only. Wallkill coach T.D. Mills said DeGroat’s commitment, “changes the landscape of Wallkill baseball and Section 9.”

“(Kyle’s an) awesome kid,” Wallkill coach T.D. Mills said. “Just opened up a lot of opportunities for kids in our area with all of the scouts that will be around. Great family. Great young man. Great friend. Great academics. Great in the weight room. Great on the field…Dude keeps on giving back.”
